Effects of the conflict

Damage and destruction litter a street in the battered city of Qusayr, southwest of Homs in western Syria, on June 20, 2012. (Photo: AFP/GettyImages) We explained before how the civil war started with the rise of the Arab Spring. The Arab spring lead to many protests in the Arab world against the seating governments. The protests caused the governments to be thrown over. This went on like a 'domino effect' all over the Arab world and many revolutions followed. Well, in Syria the same case happened, but what are actually the effects of this civil war?

First of all, up to day, more than 200,000 Syrian people have died. According to the NOS news of 1st of January 2015, 76,000 people died in the year 2014 only.

Syrians killed since March 2011Also according to estimations and calculations, 6.5 million Syrians have been displaced, more than 3 million Syrians have fled from Syria to countries such as Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and become refugees. Not to forget the millions more who have been left in poor living conditions. These people are struggling to get enough of food and drinking water at the moment. Since Assad is fighting with the government military against the Syrian opposition, the Western countries have decided to tighten the sanctions against Syria. This has had a big influence on the social bonds Syria has with Europe and North America. Not to speak about the Syrian economy at the moment. By July 2013, the economy has shrunk by 45%, and now in 2015, we can almost say for sure that their economy has worsened over time.

Also, since the conflict has started, many demonstrators have been arrested and political prisoners have been tortured. This is violation of the human rights. And not only violation of human rights is an effect of the Syrian Civil War, a massive crime wave is an effect too. Many stores have been robbed because of all the fighting and people still wanting food and other things. During the war, chemical weapons were used in the attack on the Ghouta area of Damascus, which have killed approximately 300 people and many people had lung and breathing problems. Also a lot of people were deformed after the use of the chemical weapons. Fortunately, in the spring of 2014 all the chemical weapons were removed and all the facilities used to produce the chemical weapons were destroyed, however it has had a big impact on the war.

These were the main effects of the Syrian Civil War. Many will still come in the years ahead, but these were the main effects up to January 2015. Social bonds with the West are broken and peace (especially not perpetual peace between the two opposing groups) won't be restored soon.
